Tennis: Mats Wilander gets Roger Federer.

Just last month, prior to the Chung versus Roger Federer encounter, Mats Wilander said, “You have to have unbelievable skills to play like Federer, and I don’t think we’ll ever see his style again.”

Are Rafael Nadal and Novak Djokovic bigger champions than Roger Federer?

Even the hardcore fans of Novak Djokovic and Rafael Nadal suspect, if not believe, that there is something extraordinary about this thirty-six-year-old dude, which their favorites seem to lack. Tennis enthusiasts either relish or fear the prospects of this old man winning slams well beyond Novak Djokovic’s and Rafael Nadal’s retirements. What makes Roger Federer go on, and on, and on? 138mph, like Mats Wilander, posted last year about Roger Federer’s insane talent, as compared to Rafa Nadal’s and Novak Djokovic’s. We also believe that Novak and Rafa are probably bigger champions than Roger because they have much less talent to work with and yet wear down even Roger Federer with their athleticism, retrieving abilities, and undying will. Djokovic and Nadal are very talented too, but not nearly as talented as Roger Federer. His ability to make the not so easy look easy enough to inspire others is truly remarkable and unparalleled.  Federer can do anything with his racket and make it look effortless too. Federer’s doesn’t muscle the ball like others, his talent is rooted in pure timing.

Will there be many and better versions of Djokovic in the future?

Mats Wilander believes, Hyeon Chung is even more intimidating than Novak Djokovic and Chung has done little more than copy Djokovic’s style of play. The emergence of Hyeon Chung goes to show that there will be better versions of Novak Djokovic in the near future. The styles of Nadal and Djokovic are heavily dependent on athleticism, running, and physicality. They are not exceptionally unique and can quite easily be replicated.

Is the game headed towards Djokovic’s style of play rather than Federer’s?

Wilander believes that Chung’s emergence is “very exciting” and he could be the future of the game.

“He is a frightening prospect because I don’t think the style of tennis is going in the direction of Roger Federer,” Wilander said. “It’s going in the direction of great athleticism and being aggressive from the back of the court.

“You have to have unbelievable skills to play like Federer and I don’t think we’ll ever see his style again.

“I think the Djokovic style is the blueprint that Chung has followed and he is reminiscent of Novak Djokovic at his best.

“But somehow he is more intimidating. He is thicker set and stronger and in terms of playing against him, it must be intimidating. And the scary thing is there’s so much room for improvement with a serve that’s basically five out of ten,” Wilander Added.

Can immense talent be replicated?

Immense talent can be surpassed and beaten but not replicated. In conclusion, tennis enthusiasts and fans, as compared to the fans of Federer, Nadal, and Djokovic, have three more years left to enjoy Federer’s inimitable style and soak in the wonders of his racket driven by pure talent. It will be nothing short of a miracle to see another Federer like talent in our lifetimes, however, there will always be more Djokovics and Nadals to enjoy, especially if the game continues in the direction of great athleticism and being aggressive from the back of the court, as Mats Wilander predicts.

  • True. Talent cannot be replicated, and especially the immense variety. I am big fan of this blog and quote it everywhere. Maybe you should consider paying me for it! :) .....
