Miami Men’s Draw Analysis

First Qtr

This quarter sports some pretty big names and hitters like Stan, and Kyrgios, serve-bots like Dr. Ivo  and Isner, young guns like Alex Zverev  and talented quirks like Dolgopolov.  However, except Goffin who must be beaten on any and every given day, all others are quite capable and some quite adept at beating themselves on a regular basis!   Does Stan have it in him to perform at phenomenal levels for yet another week after his grueling IW campaign last week where he seemed visibly gassed at the end of his final match against the Maestro?  His match with the young Zverev should be an interesting indicator of how driven Stan is about this tournament.

However, Kyrgios may be hungrier after his outstanding match against Djokovic and a missed chance against Roger in IW last week.

Pick:  Kyrgios

Possibilities:  Goffin and Stan

Second Qtr

This quarter has the Maestro himself with an early mouth watering encounter with Juan Martin Del Potro.   Can Federer win this?  SURE.  Does he really want to go all out  and win it at all cost?  I doubt it very much.  Federer is at a stage in his career where he’ll take whatever he gets but won’t over exert himself, except in slams, to get it.  Sam Querry has been painting the courts red lately and he could make a nice run here too.  The other contender from this quarter is Thiem but he needs to get past Berdych to even get a meeting with either Roger or Del Potro.  The only time that Berdych and Thiem played in the past, Berdych won quite convincingly.

Pick:  Roger

Possibilities:  Del Potro and Thiem

Dimitrov images

Third Quarter

This is another interesting quarter with Nadal, Dimitrov, the net rusher Mischa Zverev, Sock,  and Milos Raonic.  Nadal has yet to win this event and this time around too it will be as tough as ever.  Dimitrov seems to be enjoying tennis again and could be a contender in this quarter, but Sock and Milos could also make a run.  So this quarter is quite open with or without Nadal.

Pick:  Dimitrov

Possibilities:  Raonic and Sock

Nishikori image

Fourth Quarter

This quarter is Nishikori’s to lose and he may just end up losing it to Kevin Anderson in the very first match.  Lucas Pouille is yet another one to watch out for in this quarter but inconsistency has been his companion off late and he can be out against just about anyone.   Maric Cilic has not impressed so far in 2017 but this quarter could help him set a rhythm for remaining 2017.

Pick:  Nishikori

Possibilities:  Cilic and Lucas Pouille

Semi Finals

Dimitrov beats Nishikori

Roger beats Kyrgios

Final

Roger beats Dimitrov

It’ll be tough for him to do the IW – Miami Double. It’s the age ….

Interesting take on the draw. I think that since Fed won IW, if Kyrgios gets to him, he’ll win. That said, Kyrgios might not be able to get there after his stomach bug last week.

You mention that Nadal has never won this event, but seem to forget that’s he’s been to the final 4 times, whereas Dimitrov has never reached an Masters 1000 final.

Nishikori should make it through, but he might have trouble with Gilles Simon or Fernando Verdasco.
